How does uroflowmetry work?

The patient is asked to urinate into a container placed on a digital scale. Unlike regular scales, this device measures the weight on it every second and calculates the amount of urine voided per second in milliliters.

In which cases is uroflowmetry performed?

It is performed to measure the flow rate in patients with complaints of decreased urinary flow.

What is the normal urinary flow rate?

Although it varies by age and gender, values above 15-20 ml/sec are considered normal. The urinary flow graph typically appears as a sharp peak.

What changes are observed in uroflowmetry in patients with prostate enlargement?

As the urinary flow rate decreases (below 10 ml/second), the duration of urination is prolonged. The flow graph appears as an elongated curve extending to the right. Compared to normal, the urinary flow graph resembles a lower and wider peak.

What changes are observed in uroflowmetry in cases of lower urinary tract (urethral) stricture?

The urinary flow rate decreases; however, in uroflowmetry, the urine flow graph does not form a peak shape. Instead, it appears as a flatter line, and the duration is also prolonged.
